in memory
We love all the animals we care for.
Here a selection of a few of them so you can get to know them
as well as we do! Don't worry, we'll be adding more! |

This is Finley, a 17 hand, 14 year old Bay Thoroughbred Gelding.
I met him a few months ago when he came into the Days End Farm Horse Rescue, where I work as a volunteer.
He was a starvation case, and in bad shape. But thanks to DEFHRs efforts and their commitment to the animals in their care,
Finley is doing much better. Hopefully he’ll get adopted soon! |

This is Ollie, a one year old Yorkshire
Terrier. Ollie is a bundle of energy! We’re never sure who’s
taking who for a walk when we go out on the town with him.
But once he’s tuckered, he’s out, and all he wants to do is
sit in your lap. His cute little face has won our heart! |

This is Bijou,
a Boston Terrier / Pit Bull mix. She was a rescue dog, and
in proper Pit Bull fashion, she sleeps under the covers with
her owners, is deathly afraid of flies, and is the sweetest
dog you could ever want to meet. |

Buffet is a four year old Yellow Lab, named
for the famed singer/songwriter Jimmy (not the famed restaurant/eatery
Chinese.) He was adopted from lab rescue by his current owners
three years ago. He is a sweet and loving dog and at four
years old he’s just now starting to mellow out and lose his
puppy rambunctiousness. His owners are going to be blessed
with a baby soon, and we think Buffet will take extra good
care of baby to be.

Oliver is a two year old white DSH, and
before being taken in by his current parents he was a feral
kitten. His owners had recently lost their beloved cat Peezel,
and Oliver came along at just the right time. He is a bit
of a shy boy though, and as a result very few people have
actually seen him, in between his hiding stints. But we have
here the photographic proof that this Bigfoot of the feline
world does, in fact, exist.

Yes, he really is this cute! Bailey is a
Westie with a TON of personality. The undisputed ringleader
of his crew, he’s the first one to get his cohorts started
when someone comes to the door. He loves his toys and getting
attention.

Charley is quite an eccentric old fellow.
A miniature poodle, Charley has his schedule, and no human
will ever be able to divine it. He eats when he wants to,
and does what he wants to, when he wants to, driving his poor
mother to distraction with worry. But he is such a good boy
and such a gentleman.

Nick is a lump of Beagle love. He is such
a sweet boy. He loves his scratchings and would love
nothing more than to lay and be scratched all day. It takes
a lot of coaxing to get Nick to go outside and leave his comfy
bed. He's just a lazy lump of love.

Spencer is a miniature poodle, a model of
a well-behaved pooch. He loves to come up on the couch and
cuddle. And he loves to play fetch, bringing any toy he can
find for the job. And when he wants lovin’s,
nothing can dissuade him.
|
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
| |
 |
|
Zoe is Spencer’s sister, and she’s a little
more aloof than her brother. She hangs out on the Westside
couch (Spencer’s more of an Eastside dog) and is content to
do her own thing. But when she wants attention, she comes
and demands it...typical female.

Wow, talk about energy! Blink loves his walks, loves getting outside to give
the ground a good sniffing and the pavement a good pounding. Plus, Blink schooled with master illusionist Houdini himself and now has the ability to escape from ANYTHING, crates, jumping gates, etc. His owners aren’t really sure how to keep him in!

Say hello to Molly! She’s a 1 year old Goldendoodle, and a real people puppie. She loves socializing and playing outside. She’s
a serious gossip hound and keeps tabs on all the other neighborhood animals. If you did it, Molly’s seen it, and she doesn’t keep secrets well.

 |

Frisco is Molly’s older playmate. He’s an old man, and friendly as can be. Whether he’s sleeping, tottering around the house and
hanging out with Molly, or modeling the latest in canine outerwear fashions, he’s content and happy.

Schooner is another card-carrying member of AARP (the American Association
for Retired Pooches.) Schooner is mostly blind and deaf, but he doesn’t let it stop him. He still picks out his own ear ribbons
each morning. Ultimately Schooner is a lap dog and we love him!

Carson is a 9 year old Border Collie mix. She’s an active pup and loves to
play. Friendly and affectionate, Carson also loves long walks, chewing on toys, and sunsets. You’d never know she was 9 years old.

Hannah has a gift. a year old mix breed, she was a rescue dog from the pound, and her four months
there seemingly awakened a latent ability to see things that most of us can’t. She demonstrates her amazing abilities every day
on her walks, pouncing on all sorts of things that the rest of us can’t see. Thankfully Hannah is a sweetheart and uses
her powers only for good!

Clearly Pepper graduated with top honors from obedience school. A Whippet, she is
a dream to walk, quietly strolling along, heeling and obeying every command. She’s a sweetheart and a gentle soul.

This picture really does speak a thousand words. It sums up Abigail perfectly. She’s an older Golden Retriever,
and a real flower child at heart. She loves nothing more than rolling around in the grass and getting in touch with her nature friends when we go outside.
If she were a person, she would be Joni Mitchell (the singer/songwriter LOVES to roll around in the grass...little know fact.)

This is Howie, a 4 year old mixed breed. He is one of the strongest, most courageous
dogs we know. Up until a few months ago, Howie was completely paralyzed. But he had back surgery to repair the problem, and has now
had to completely relearn how to walk. Although he looks a little drunk when he does it (and maybe he is, he does like to sneak off behind
trees when he’s outside) but he can walk again completely without support. His Mom is so proud of her "Howie Bananas."

Man do we love Reese! He is such a goofball! Howie’s a 9 month old Lab German Shepherd mix.
At any moment he can break into silly fits, running in circles and jumping around. You never know when it might happen. All you can do
is sit back and enjoy the show. He also loves to hold onto his leash when he goes on his walks. He's a lovable little kook!

Rosie found Jenny in a bit of a roundabout
way. At six months, Rosie was hit by a car. Someone found
her and brought her to the emergency center. Another good
samaritan paid her bill and brought her to the Vet office
where Jenny worked. They amputated Rosie’s leg and then Jenny
took her in. She healed up fine and became a favorite of kids
around the neighborhood who would regularly hang on her. With
three legs she was more capable than most four-legged pooches.
She is sorely missed. |

Hebe was something special. Jenny had her
for fourteen years and can't help but get choked up when she
talks about her. Hebe loved everyone, dogs, cats, people,
everyone. She’d hop right up into any strangers lap.
It made her very happy. And strangely enough, when she was
happy, she would drool. Excessively. But it was the saliva
of love, and nobody minded. Much. She would often sit on Jenny’s
shoulder and lick her hair, drooling as she went. It sounds
a little gross, but it really wasn't. She had a huge heart
for such a little cat. And huge salivary glands to match.
